MHFA Basic participants identifying signs & symptoms of depression: Conestoga, July 2019.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.

Mental Health First Aid courses are taught in a dynamic and supportive classroom environment that incorporates video, activities, group discussions, case studies, and more.

MHFA participants learn to:

  • recognize signs and symptoms of mental health first aid problems

  • respond with confident and non-judgmental conversation

  • guide the person toward appropriate resources and support

MHFA courses are evidence-based programs of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
