Mental Heath First Aid Basic (12 hours) - In-Person

MHFA Basic focuses on teaching participants to identify signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems including:

  • substance related disorders

  • mood related disorders (including depression and bipolar disorder)

  • anxiety and trauma related disorders

  • psychotic disorders.

It also teaches crisis first aid for:

  • Substance overdose

  • Suicidal behaviour

  • Panic attacks

  • Acute stress

  • Psychotic episodes

MHFA also emphasizes the importance of fighting stigma against mental health problems by making sure that participants leave the course with good quality information and resources to explore and share.

Participants who take this course are well prepared to have direct and confident conversations about mental health with their family, friends, communities, and workplaces. 

MHFA courses are taught in a dynamic and supportive classroom environment and incorporate video, activities, group discussions, case studies, and more.

MHFA Basic is a 12-hr certificate course delivered over 2 full days or 4 half-days. All MHFA courses are evidence-based programs of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
